Notes:
starkness THANK YOU FOR THE IMPROTU BETA. TITLE IS FROM THE CARDIGAN'S SONG, 'LIVE AND LEARN' .
Dean sees it first, the way Sam's face falls when Jo takes a step back. He's not even going to register if his little brother can figure out even that Dean's still in the room as Sam's giant shoulders fall, taking in a deep labored breath. Apparently Sam remembers a little of what happened, it's clear that Jo remembers it all and isn't about to forgive him that easily. He wants to kick himself, and probably will later when he remembers telling Jo about the demon. Sometime it lies, sometimes it tells the truth to fuck with your head. He almost started to tell her about the things he had said to Sam, or the things Sam says he said when that shapeshifter son of a bitch had his skin. There's got to be a right way to phrase that, he mutters, and pulls out a rickety chair from the back of the bar.
"What do you want, Sam?" her arms crossed over her chest, she's trying her best to close him out. Dean wouldn't be surprised if her hand reached out...and hey. There we go, she reached out for the nearest weapon, her hand clasping an ice pick.
He's going to hear about this later in the Impala. Sam will do nothing but whine about how this isn't fair until they reach wherever they're going. This is why they're here, actually. Not to apologize but to see Ash. "I'm sorry, Jo."
"yeah. You were possesed, wasn't you, I know." she snaps back, and even Dean jumps alittle. He's given up on figuring out the right way to discuss a shapeshifter, because, there's not alot of people he can seriously have this discussion with, and when he tries to talk with Sam, lately they've gotten nowhere. Lately? Sam's just been brooding alot.
"If it'd been me..." it probably would be best to sit and not mention that whole remembering being there for a little of the whole night thing Dean wants to yell out and sinks back down into his chair. "I would never hurt you."
Dean's ready to throw himself at Sam, kiss his feet. The puppy dog eyes do it to him everytime, but clearly the small blonde isn't quite an easy sell. Dean sees her fingers flex around the ice pick, her teeth are digging into the corner of her bottom lip. Sam keeps walking closer and Jo keeps backing up. He wants to yell at his stupid little brother to cut it out, he's not Superman. That ice pick is going to hurt. "Stay back" Jo's voice squeaked, eyes narrowed. "I mean it, Sam, stay back."
Dean scooted to the edge of his seat, waiting to leap up and pull his baby brother away, apologizing over and over again as he dragged the larger man towards the door. Sam ran a hand through his hair, pushing the bangs from his eyes before he turned, walking past his brother out the door. He wasn't about to admit he was a little disappointed, Dean has expected a fight. He looked up meet Jo's eyes. "I'm going too. Don't get all pissy."
She just glared, both hands on her hips.
"He wasn't himself, you know?" Dean said softly, grabbing for his leather jacket. His answer came way of a beer bottle flying over his head. "Alright, alright, message received."
"Don't ever bring him here again, Dean." Jo's lips curled into a snarl,"I mean it."
He just nodded, turning so he could push his way out of the bar.
**********************
His brother's knees shook as he bounced his legs, fingers drumming against his thighs.
"Stop thinking so much." Dean muttered, rolling his eyes,"It's hurting my head."
Sam turned his shoulders to face his brother, "..Jo?"
"I'd give up on Jo for awhile, little brother." he didn't even have to turn to look back at Sam. He could hear the soft sigh and the shift in the seat as he turned to look out the window. He'd spent way too much time with his little brother. "Some people don't...understand, you know?" he wanted to add, that dad thing was a really nice touch, then the attempted whatever that was on the bar that Jo yelled about, that was the icing on the cake.
He turned to watch Sam's eyes close. "I'm going to stop in a minute, or at the first place I see. Hungry?"
Sam didn't answer.
"Alright then." Dean sighed.
